The top teams from the eight installments of the 2021 I-10 Shootout Women’s Soccer Tournament return for this year’s tournament, scheduled for Jan. 13-15 at Katy ISD venues.
Of the 64 teams competing, 70 percent qualified for the playoffs last spring, some of which had exceptional runs. The tournament field includes state class 6A Memorial semifinalist, playing in the Falcon Bracket, and state 5A champion Dripping Springs, playing in the Tiger Bracket. Fourteen other teams from this year’s tournament reached regional quarterfinals or better in 2021.
Teams must win three consecutive matches to win the title in one of eight brackets, which feature varying degrees of competition. Those who qualify for the bracket finals are scheduled to play on January 15 at Legacy Stadium or Rhodes Stadium.
The Spartan, Falcon and Cougar supports are among the most difficult to cross each year. This year is no exception as District 19-6A and regional champion Seven Lakes host seven other playoff teams, including regional semi-finalists Tomball Memorial and Beaumont West Brook.
Tompkins’ squad are home to six playoff teams, including Memorial and Jordan, making their I-10 college debut. The Cinco Ranch squad consists of eight playoff teams, including St. Agnes, TAPPS Division I finalist, Cy-Fair, III-6A region finalist, and Foster, III-5A semi-finalist.
The tournament was adjusted to a pool-play format in half of the installments last year, although four finals are still contested.
West Brook defeated Mayde Creek in last year’s Ram Final, Lumberton defeating Foster for the Maverick title, Ridge Point defeating Tompkins in the Falcon Final and Cy-Fair defeating Friendswood for the Cougar crown. Three of those four champions are in the same bracket this year.
Taylor was unofficially the Mustang champion last year, finishing as the only 3-0 team in the bracket. Langham Creek had a similar run in the Panther Bracket, but will be competing in the Cougar Bracket this year.
Katy and Elkins were unbeaten in the Tiger game last year, including a head-to-head draw. Both are back in the range this year. The Spartan Bracket included the undefeated teams Seven Lakes and St. Agnes.
The I-10 Shootout features 48 junior varsity teams, bringing the total number of players participating in the event to over 2,200. Proceeds from the event fund the I-10 Shootout scholarship program, as well as the support for local high school football programs through their school athletics recall clubs.
