CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A scary scene unfolded for parents last weekend at a youth soccer field. Someone fired several shots near where the children were playing and sent everyone to disperse.
“It’s scary,” said Ingrid Vandelinder, parent of one of the children who plays soccer.
From Thursday afternoon, Centerville Park is silent. The fields are empty, but over the weekend the sound of cheering was replaced by the sound of gunfire.
“Suddenly it started to come a little closer,” Vandelinder added. “It looked more like a handgun this time. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom.”
The shots appeared to be coming from the woods right next to where Vandelinder’s 5-year-old daughter Bethany was playing.
“It was so quick,” she said. “I heard them say ‘Get off’. I said ‘Where is she?’ He [Vandelinder’s husband] said ‘She’s right here’, and he was on top of her. All the children were under their parents.
As fast as they came, the shooting stopped. No one was hurt.
“My daughter tells me that the next day she says she had a nightmare last night when someone was shooting us,” Vandelinder added. “I’m like oh my god you’re 5, you shouldn’t have to worry about that.”
The league, which is run by the Chesapeake United Soccer Club, has sent an email reassuring parents that things are safe.
“We don’t know this won’t happen again,” Vandelinder said. “What will it take, someone who gets hurt, to get something really done about it?” “
Chesapeake United is working with the Police Department in hopes of finding who fired. Parents say the only shots they want to worry about are penalties.
“Why were they shooting at a field full of children? Vandelinder asked.
Chesapeake United have asked the city for an increased police presence for the weekend.
