Just a yellow?
It’s not the kind of dive you would usually see on a soccer field.
On Sunday, a Polish fifth division match between the reserve team Olimpia Elbląg and PISA Primavera Barczewo was interrupted by a parachutist landing in the midfield in the middle of the match.
Everyone in the field handled the bizarre situation fairly calmly. The players rushed out of the way of the airborne pitch invader, the announcer let out a warm chuckle, and the referee responded by showing the parachutist a yellow card.
It’s impeccable comedic timing by the ref. He approaches the parachutist like it’s the most normal thing in the world and doesn’t blink his eyes showing him the yellow. Not a red one. Let’s not overreact to the person who falls from the sky and finds himself in the middle of a soccer game. This is only worth a warning.
What makes the incident even better is that the skydiver took a first-person video of his descent into the park. It shows a lot of open green spaces around the soccer field, but whether they didn’t think they could get to the meadow in the distance or just wanted to participate in an amateur sporting event, they ended up right in the center from the field. The video also features an exceptional reaction from one of the players in yellow, who doesn’t realize that there is someone falling from above until the very last moment.
This is not the first time that someone has come from the sky to interrupt a sporting event. (It happened in England, Italy and, above all, during a 1993 Evander Holyfield Fight.) Even though it was a game at the bottom of the Polish football pyramid, the referee’s yellow card made this incident one of the best of its kind.
