Louisville 6, alumni 4
The Louisville Leopards boys football team took a 6-1 lead and won a 6-4 victory over the Louisville alumni on Friday night at Louisville Leopards Stadium.
The three Notch goals of the Adams brothers
Junior Brady Adams scored a goal in each half to lead the University of Louisville. Adams put the Leopards on the board early in the ninth minute with an assist from fellow junior Angelo Paquelet. The same junior combination would score what would be the decisive goal at the end of the 54th minute as the Leopards built a 5-1 advantage.
Riley Adams (Class of 2021) tied his younger brother’s score with his own goal at 13:46 of the first half to tie the game at 1-1. He found the back of the net via a cross pass from Adams’ older brother Bailey Adams (2018 Alum).
In the 2021 alumni game, Bailey and Riley both scored goals to help the alumni claim their first victory since the first alumni game of 2013. Brady turned the script on this year’s contest by scoring two goals which turned out to be the difference in the end result.
Leopards build 6-1 lead
Unlike a year ago, the wheels went off early for the alumni team after battling the college team to a 1-1 draw in the 28th minute. However, Louisville struck twice in the final 12:13 of the first half to take a 3-1 halftime lead. Junior Drew Dillen restored the lead to the Leopards with an assist from second Kadan Swope. Then freshman Carter Burton provided the assist for second Nick Johnston’s goal with 6:06 left in the first half.
In the second half, Louisville scored three more goals in less than six minutes to take a 6-1 lead. Dillen provided the assist on Paquetet’s goal in the 50th minute. Paquetet then assisted Brady Adams’ second goal four minutes later.
The Leopards’ final goal came 77 seconds later and caused confusion. Senior Ian Darrow delivered a pass to second Dominic Porter-Kovacich near the left sideline. Porter-Kovacich fired a shot from the pass and the ball exploded into the goal. However, when he rebounded he found his way through a hole in the net. From the perspective of the crowd, it looked like the ball had just missed the net as it ended up in the main hall of the stadium. Nonetheless, it counted in the official score to put the Louisville Varsity ahead 6-1 with 24:45 remaining.
Smith scores a pair of goals for the oldies
The Alumni did not fall without a fight. Bailey Adams’ 66th-minute goal snapped the Leopards’ five-game winning streak. The Oldies scored twice more in the 9:04 final as Austin Smith (Class of 2022) scored in the 71st minute and 77th minute to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The match was even more intense in the final minutes as the stadium scoreboard still showed the score at 5-4. Regardless of the upside being debated, the Louisville Varsity defense blanked the oldies the rest of the way to prevail for their first win over the oldies since 2019.
