Monsignor Farrell’s college football coach Ed Hynes didn’t mince words when discussing the recovery period after Farrell’s final alumni football game last Saturday at Dennis Barrett Stadium.
“Local reports today suggest there is a shortage of ice packs in the Oakwood area,” laughed the coach, who is a former Lions football star himself.
The truth is, although the game was last played in 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Saturday’s last game was a big success, according to Hynes.
“Over 60 alumni traveled to the tri-state area and even as far away as Virginia to participate in the game,” the coach explained. “The brothers played two hours of spirited football on a hot summer evening.”

“And after,” Hynes added. “Players and families were treated to a reception hosted by a former footballer – chef Eddie Canlon (1980).”
The evening was dedicated to footballer Farrell Michael Bielawski (2025), who died tragically last month, according to the coach.
Additionally, the group of alumni generously donated for the Jack Hynes Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded in July.
