The Merrill Lady Jays hosted the Wausau East Lumberjacks on Thursday April 28, 2022 for a close and energetic football game.
“Our best game of the season by far, and I would say we were extremely unlucky to come out of the game with a loss,” said Kyle Hahn, head coach of Merrill Girls Varsity Soccer. “The girls played fast and aggressive from the kick-off, and Alayna Boyd had fun getting past the East defenders all night. We held them scoreless in the top 40 (a first for our group this season) and had a few good chances saved by their goalkeeper to keep things in place before half-time.
“During the break, we discussed the need to maintain or even increase our energy in the second half,” he said. “Unfortunately East took advantage of a long shot that bounced awkwardly before it hit Anna Bowe five minutes into the second half. However, the game never looked out of reach for us. .
“Even with a goal 30 seconds from time, our girls were looking for opportunities and pushing back the East,” Hahn said. “While we are never happy with a loss, there were a lot of good takeaways from this game that can serve as a model for us for the rest of the season.
Merrill took 5 shots on goal; all were blocked by Wausau East. East took 8 shots on goal and Anne Bowe blocked all but the unlucky one (for Merrill). Corner kicks: Merrill 4/Wausau East 1.
