Gatorade Names Harwood’s Tanum Nelson Top Vermont Women’s Soccer Player — Waterbury Roundabout

The Gatorade organization has named Tanum Nelson, a recent Harwood Union High School graduate, Vermont Women’s Soccer Player of the Year for the 2021 fall soccer season.

Nelson is Harwood’s first female soccer player to be chosen by Gatorade in its 37 years of honoring the nation’s top high school athletes. Announced Thursdaythe award recognizes athletic excellence as well as academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

This recognition makes Nelson, of Duxbury, a finalist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year honor which is expected to be announced shortly.

The 5-foot-9 midfielder scored 35 goals and had 14 assists last fall, leading the Highlanders (14-2-1) to the Division II semi-finals.

A United Soccer Coaches All-American, Nelson was named Player of the Year by the Burlington Free Press and Times Argus newspapers. Also a three-time Capital League Player of the Year, she finished her high school career with 103 goals.

Harwood college football coach Mike Vasseur thought Gatorade’s choice was well deserved. “Tanum is an incredible athlete and footballer. However, it is her love of the game and her competitiveness that sets her apart. She never gives up and really enjoys the challenge of being man-marked,” he said. he said: “You want Tanum in your team because playing against her is a huge challenge. We are super excited to see how she performs in college.
