Warning: Contains spoilers for Yellow jackets episode 1.
In the first episode of Yellow jackets the audience is introduced to many teenage footballers and it can be difficult to know who the different characters are and if they are alive or dead in the future. Yellow jackets should be an intriguing thriller where following the mystery is primarily the purpose of the show. However, the huge initial distribution list and time skips over a 25-year period can complicate matters.
Yellow jackets opened in 1996, when a New Jersey high school football team discovered they were going to the national championship in Seattle. After establishing the drama between the various teenagers, the Yellowjackets plane crashes into the wild and the survivors struggle to stay alive as they wait 19 months to be saved, forming cannibalistic tribes to do so. Yellow jackets simultaneously shows the stories of four of the survivors living in 2021 as their secrets risk being revealed on the 25the anniversary of the tragic event.
Although the entire Yellowjackets squad has 18 players, not all of them are named or have lines in Yellow jackets Episode 1. While it makes it harder to keep track of the whole team, even remembering who the main players are can be difficult. Here is a complete guide to each of the Yellowjackets football players, including their personalities, their role in the squad. Also included are predictions as to whether or not they are alive in 2021 – which is a somewhat complicated question, as it’s clear that more of the top four are still alive based on conversations in 2021, but none of the other adult actors have been announced.
Ella Purnell as Jackie
Jackie, played by Ella Purnell, is the captain of the Yellowjackets team. Although she struggles at times, she strives to keep the team in line and can be a strong leader when the time comes. She is Shauna’s best friend and is dating Jeff Sadecki (Jack DePew). She has not been shown to be alive in 2021 and the opening scene shows someone wearing her necklace being killed by the tribe. As she gives this necklace to Shauna in Yellow jackets Episode 1, it’s likely to be returned to Jackie at some point given that Shauna is still alive in 2021.
Sophie Nélisse as Shauna
Shauna, played by Sophie Nélisse in 1996, is Jackie’s best friend and they plan to live together at university. Even before the plane crash, several obstacles stand in the way. Shortly before leaving to get on the plane, Shauna is seen reading an acceptance letter to another college (Brown), and she had several secret affairs where she slept with Jackie’s boyfriend. , Jeff. While waiting for take-off, Jackie gives Shauna her heart-shaped necklace as a lucky charm and valium to help her sleep. Shauna is still alive in 2021 and is played by Melanie Lynskey, she is now married to Jeff (played by Warren Kole in 2021).
Jasmin Savoy Brown as Taissa
Taissa is played by Jasmin Savoy Brown in 1996. Taissa is a natural leader and goes behind Jackie’s back as a team captain to rally the team around his own ideas. Having decided that Allie, the team’s freshman, is a weak link in their squad, she asks the rest of the team to freeze her and not give her the ball. When the team refuses, she aggressively plays around Allie, claiming that she forces her to get in shape, but ultimately tackles her and breaks her leg, although she denies this was intentional. Taissa is one of the Yellowjackets who survives the wilderness and in 2021 (played by Tawny Cypress) is expressing her leadership in new ways as she runs for the New Jersey State Senate.
Sophie Thatcher as Natalie
Sophie Thatcher plays the 1996 iteration of Natalie. She is labeled burnout by some, but is an integral part of the Yellowjackets’ roster and refuses to participate in Taissa’s plan to freeze Allie saying they should instead play as a team to win. She is seen consuming both alcohol and drugs recreationally, including taking LSD at a party in the woods. This may be a form of coping mechanism for her family life, as it is shown that she lives in a trailer and her parents are not shown for Yellow jackets Episode 1. Natalie is still alive in the future (played by Juliette Lewis) and is seen leaving rehab before returning to New Jersey to catch up with Misty.
Samantha Hanratty as Misty
Misty, played by Samantha Hanratty, is Yellowjacket’s equipment manager. She is particularly enthusiastic in her role and seems struck by the rest of the squad, singing for the team mascot so enthusiastically that even the coach and assistant coach gives her a sidelong glance. As the equipment manager, she’s both part of the team getting on the plane, but also a stranger to the main group who seems not to be invited to the party in the woods. She also shows sociopathic tendencies when shown standing and watching a helpless animal drown in her pool. She is revealed to be the leader of the cannibalistic tribe in the desert and survives the events of 1996 to be portrayed in 2021 by Christina Ricci as she works in a nursing home and continues to display elements of cruelty.
Pearl Amanda Dickson as Allie
Pearl Amanda Dickson plays Allie. She is the youngest member of the team and is looked down upon by others. She is whiny and upright, disappointed that she missed her invitation to the ball because the Yellowjackets are going to compete nationally, and does not seem to take into account the feelings of others as she makes a sarcastic remark to Van and does not appear. not to realize it was irrelevant. Because Taissa breaks her leg, she misses the trip and ultimately survives. She is shown alive in 2021 (played by Tonya Cornelisse) and reflects on how she narrowly avoided being a part of the plane crash.
Liv Hewson as Vanessa
Liv Hewson plays Vanessa, commonly known as Van. Van is the goalkeeper for the Yellowjacket and likes to have fun and quickly joke around. They make jokes about Lottie’s dad when the team boards the private jet and at the party they try to broadcast the fight between Shauna and Taissa before Jackie steps in. Even when Jackie calls the Yellowjackets for a conversation, they take a moment to get some. extra beer from the keg. Van is shown to have to wake their mother from a stupor on the couch to get to the plane and appears to have very few parental limits. Although they survive the plane crash, it is not clear if Van could be one of the team members who are still alive in the future, as there is no evidence. in any event.
Courtney Eaton as Lottie
Lottie is played by Courtney Eaton. Lottie is relatively averse to conflict, not wanting to weigh in on the plan to freeze Allie and simply looking aside when Shauna and Taissa start to fight at the party. Lottie is shown receiving Loxipene by a maid. Loxipene is an antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of schizophrenia, which will likely become relevant later in the series. His father is referenced as being quite absent and related to his large amount of cash, as evidenced by his decision to hire a private jet for the Yellowjackets. Like Van, she survives the plane crash, but it is not known if she is still alive in 2021.
Jane Widdop as Laura Lee
Laura Lee is played by Jane Widdop. Laura Lee is defined in the series by her faith. She insists on a group prayer before the practice match, complimenting the other team members, she only mentions that they are “beautiful in the eyes of our lord”And we see her praying alone at home before going to board the plane. His faith could be shaken by the plane crash, but could also lead him to assume that they will be protected by God in the long run. In Yellow jackets episode 1, it is not known if she is alive in 2021.
Keeya King as Akilah
Akilah, played by Keeya King is only present in a few scenes before the plane crash. The other Yellowjackets and Ben Scott, the assistant coach, call him JV, meaning Junior Varsity, suggesting a recent promotion to the Varsity team. When she sits on the plane, Mari teases her like a “new blood“and Akilah looks uncomfortable and doesn’t know what to do until Mari assures her that she is joking. There is no evidence to suggest if Akila made it out of the wilderness alive.
Alexa Barajas as Mari
Alexa Barajas plays Mari. Like Akilah, she is mostly only seen in the background until the final scene on the plane. She’s a bit of a prankster, playing with Akilah, but ultimately a nice person and offers Akilah snacks afterwards. Again, it’s unclear if she’s alive or dead in 2021.
Other Yellow Vests
Mya Lowe and Princess Davis both play Yellowjackets in the plane crash, but only appear in the background of the shots and have no talking lines. Nothing is known of their personalities or if they are alive in 2021, but the fact that they are simply credited as Yellowjacket # 1 and Yellowjacket # 2 does not look promising for their fate in the plane crash at the end. of Yellow jackets episode 1.
