Burdette named best football player of the week

CULVER CITY, CA – Tennessee senior Burdette Abbey was named TopDrawerSoccer.com player of the week, the post said on Tuesday.

The Monrovia, Md., Midfielder was on the pitch for almost three minutes at Orange Beach, anchoring the midfielder and winning the SEC tournament MVP honors. She scored her first goal of the season in the UT tournament opener, a 5-2 win over Florida. She also played a key role in the title match against Arkansas, sliding to salvage a Razorback scoring opportunity at close range and repeatedly winning balls in the air to help break up the attack on the Arkansas and secure the decisive 3-0 victory.

This is the first TopDrawerSoccer.com honor in Burdette’s career. She is the fourth volunteer to win Team of the Week honors this season, and the first to be named Player of the Week.

Redshirt-sophomore Jaïda Thomas also received an honorable mention in the last edition of TDS Team of the Week. She scored five goals and one assist in three games at the SEC tournament.

The No.6 from Tennessee, the No.3 seed in the NCAA tournament, will be back in action on Friday, hosting Lipscomb at Regal Stadium. Game time is 5 p.m. ET, and the game will air on SECN +.
