GREENSBORO, North Carolina (theACC.com) – Pitt graduate midfielder Matt Bailey and Virginia Tech freshman midfielder Danny Flores took home the ACC men’s offensive player of the week honors, while Duke senior goaltender Eliot Hamill has won the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Hailing from Kent Island, Md., Bailey scored his first goal as a Panther on Saturday in Pitt’s No.15 2-0 win over No.2 Clemson. His 58th-minute goal broke a scoreless stalemate. Making his first start of the season, Bailey scored an assist from Veljko Petkovic and helped Pitt secure his second win over a top-five foe this season and helped end Clemson’s 31-game unbeaten streak. at home, which dated from the 2018 season.
Flores scored a spectacular gold goal in overtime on Friday in a 2-1 victory over the ACC over Notre Dame, dribbling four defenders into the box before slipping the ball past the goalkeeper. The goal was No. 4 in SportsCenter’s Top 10 Games that night. The Half Moon Bay, Calif., Native played 188 minutes in the Hokies’ victories over William & Mary and Notre Dame last week.
Hamill made five saves on Friday as No.6 Duke hit the road and claimed a 1-0 victory at Syracuse. A native of Scarsdale, New York, Hamill faced 10 shots and completed his fifth shutout of the season. He currently leads the league in shutouts (5), save percentage (.964) and goals against average (0.16). Duke’s five shutouts this season are the most important on the schedule since 2004.
Nine CCA teams are in non-league action in midweek games this week. Conference play resumes Friday with five games, including a top-25 showdown in Durham, NC, as No.14 Louisville visits No.4 Duke. Virginia and Notre Dame face off Friday at 6 p.m. on the ACC network. The state of North Carolina and North Carolina end the weekend at 7 p.m. Sunday in a clash that will also be televised on the ACC network.
