AWESOME NUMBERS: UEFA’s most-watched women’s football match on ESPN this year

The 2022 UEFA European Women’s Championship final – England’s 2-1 win over Germany on Sunday – drew an average viewership of 971,000 viewers (P2+), making it the football game most-watched on ESPN networks in 2022.

Viewership peaked from 2:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the second half of extra time with 1.2 million viewers.

England-Germany, the match between two football rivals, broke the previous record: 732,000 viewers on average on Sunday June 5 watched the UEFA World Cup qualifying final between the Wales and Ukraine on ESPN. The #WEURO2022 final is the most watched women’s football match on ESPN networks since May 30, 2015, USA-South Korea match (998,000 viewers).

Top 10 Markets: Norfolk (1.2), San Diego (1.0), Washington, DC (1.0), West Palm Beach (1.0), Austin, Texas (0.9), Miami (0 .9), Buffalo (0.8), Raleigh-Durham (0.8), Las Vegas 0.8 and Richmond, Virginia (0.7).

The 25-day competition capped off an unprecedented summer of women’s sports on ESPN platforms, led by the famous “Fifty/50” content initiative.

Tournament summary:

The 15 match windows of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group stage on ESPN2 averaged 172,000 viewers, representing a 30% increase over the comparable timeslot (3:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.; 132,000 viewers in June).

  • Four quarter-final matches drew an average viewership of 320,000, an 86% increase on the group stage average
  • The semi-final matches averaged 326,000 viewers.
