AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Former Peninsula College football player turns professional









HOUSTON — Former Peninsula College men’s soccer player Sterling Penniston-John has signed a professional MLS NEXT Pro contract with Houston Dynamo 2, an offshoot of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo.

While at Peninsula in 2018-19, Penniston-John was a two-time Northwest Athletic Conference All-Star as a defenseman, scoring three goals for the Pirates before being traded to play at the University of Washington. Utah Valley.

In his only full season with UVU, the Las Vegas native appeared in 16 games, starting seven times and finishing with one goal and one assist as a defenseman.

MLS NEXT Pro is a new professional soccer league that will debut in March as the third tier of the American soccer professional pyramid, with 20 MLS clubs fielding secondary teams and one independent club.

PORT ANGELES — Registration is underway for the Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club’s Spring Academy.

On Monday and Wednesday evenings from April 11 to May 25, U6 to U15 players (birth years 2006-2014) will meet at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Ground and train from 5:30-7:15 p.m.

Registration is $75 per player and includes a t-shirt.

Face masks will not be required.

Players must wear soccer cleats, shin guards with long socks, and sports gear appropriate for the weather conditions.

Players should also bring a water bottle and a soccer ball of the correct size for their age group.
