The United States Women’s National Team won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, beating a respectable Australian team and leaving the Matildas without a podium spot.
After the final whistle to end the 4-3 thriller, many devastated Australians remained on the pitch to mourn their defeat. Superstar striker and Matildas captain Sam Kerr – who became Australia’s all-time top scorer with a 17th-minute equalizer – was among the most dejected on the pitch.
Luckily, there was someone willing to offer her a shoulder to cry on – but somewhat unusually, she wore different colors.
USWNT midfielder Kristie Mewis dropped in to comfort Kerr, following her team’s heartbreaker. Fans already suspected the pair of international soccer stars were dating due to their social media interactions, and photos from Thursday’s bronze medal game offer further proof that Mewis and Kerr could be one of the new sport power couples.
Mewis, who is 30, only recently returned to the national team ranks after a six-year hiatus. Had the games been held in 2020, she likely wouldn’t have been in contention for a spot on the roster. But with three USWNT goals and an assist to his name heading into the final stretch before the Olympics, it began to look like the Houston star Dash might just be punching his ticket to Tokyo.
Kerr’s appearance at the games was never in doubt. The 27-year-old has long been considered one of the best female soccer players in the world, with Insider placing her fourth in her 2020 ranking of the 50 best stars in the world. A deadly striker, Kerr became the all-time leading scorer in her home country’s W-League and the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League.
The Australian has since taken on a new challenge in England’s FA Women’s Super League, where she has scored 21 goals in 22 appearances for Chelsea.
She and Mewis exchanged many flirty messages in each other’s Instagram comments. At the start of the Olympics, the American midfielder wrote “Glad to see you’re signing up for your new number” in a photo of Kerr and some Matildas teammates holding peace signs. Kerr replied “committing to you more than 2 [sic].”
Despite Mewis and Kerr rather the public court, it was unclear if their comments were made in jest. Neither has officially confirmed their relationship status, but a photo Kerr posted of the couple kissing offers a not-so-subtle hint that they’re romantically involved in a relationship. certain extent.
Women’s football fans were overwhelmingly supportive after seeing photos of the alleged couple interacting in person. Many took to Twitter to express their excitement – and crack jokes at the expense of those who thought they were just friends:
