A man died after a fight over a referee’s decision during an adult football match

A 29-year-old man died of injuries sustained in a fight on the field following a referee’s call during an adult soccer game, police in Oxnard, Calif.

By OPD, Misael Sanchez of Port Hueneme, Calif., died Monday, 15 days after being injured in the July 10 game. His cause of death was pending an autopsy.

Police say Sanchez was “involved in a large football brawl that included players from both teams and spectators” that broke out on a field at Oxnard High School. The football league was not affiliated with the school, Ventura County Star reports. According to a police report from the day of the fight, officers arrived to find Sanchez unresponsive and not breathing. He was taken to a local hospital.

Witnesses told police the fight broke out when opposing teams disagreed with a referee’s decision. Sanchez was assaulted by multiple attackers, according to the police report. Police said they arrested a 46-year-old man on the day of the fight, but did not note that formal charges had been filed in Monday’s statement. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking for the help of witnesses who may have recorded video of the fight.
