In an 80-minute game, Dobie High School soccer player Kori Pounds established herself as one of Pasadena ISD’s top players.
Pounds recorded the rare hat trick, scoring all of his team’s points as he led the Lady Longhorns to a 3-0 District 22-6A win over rival Pasadena Memorial at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
At the nightcap on Monday night, both men’s programs went home with a 0-0 stalemate.
The Lady Longhorns only needed one of Pounds scores to give them three points for the win because the defense was so good.
She scored her first two goals in the first half, putting her in position for the hat-trick when she scored with just 17 seconds left for her second goal.

“Since her first year, she has always been hardworking. That’s how she scored all three of her hard-working goals,” Dobie’s head coach Monica Mackey said. “She’s a strong player.”
That work ethic is what stands out in this member of the senior class.
“She’s never satisfied, always hungry and a good girl. Good kid in the classroom, all around,” Mackey said.
Mackey said the Lady Longhorns are fighting the injury bug right now, but when players put on shows like Pounds, you forget about those injuries.
In the boys game, it was a frustrating night for the Longhorns and their offense. Dobie peppered Memorial’s goal with shots on goal but had nothing to show after 80 minutes.
Victor Hernandez, the spunky Dobie player who always seems to be near the center of the action, was responsible for most of the staring in the Mavs net. In the second half he also had a free kick from the 23 yard line and another long kick headed by a team-mate but the ball sailed over the goal.
Jordi Garcia and Juan Lopez were among other Dobie players who shot at the net but came away empty-handed.
Goaltender Eris Acosta, who is now on course to break the school record for most shutouts in a Dobie career, was credited for the shutout. The school record is 33 and it is believed to have been Acosta’s 31st.
But the best goalie play of the night belonged to Mavs goaltender Geo Arango. Without his diving and guidance, Dobie might have won the match 5-0.
Memorial threats on Dobie’s Net were few and far between. There were a few corner kicks, but other than that Memorial fans didn’t have much to cheer about unless it was one of Arango’s saves.
Tuesday night’s schedule will feature a 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. doubleheader. The Channelview men’s team will make their second trip to Veterans Memorial Stadium, taking on Sam Rayburn in the opener. At the last drink, the girls of Deer Park oppose Pasadena.
